About me

Do any of these sound familiar?

“I used to sing in choir but I haven’t sung in so long and I don’t know how to get started again.”

“I’ve always wanted to play piano but I don’t know if it’s too late to start…”

“I want my child to play music but I don’t know where to start with them.”

“What is that huge instrument in the back of the church? I wonder if I can play that…?”

If so, you found the right spot! I understand that everybody is at a different spot on their musical journey and I want to make sure you are successful and have as much fun as possible wherever you are!

I am a Southern California based piano, voice, and organ instructor with a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music in Vocal Chamber Music from the University of Redlands. My education at the University of Redlands included extensive study of vocal, organ and piano repertoire, technique, and pedagogy.
I teach through my own studio in Long Beach, CA.

I started teaching piano in 2014 in Bonn, Germany and since then have also had a private piano studio in Redlands, CA. Until recently I was a voice, organ, and piano instructor with the University of Redlands Community School of Music, and the Arts and a piano and voice instructor at the Beaumont Music Centre.

I love engaging with students and their musical passions and my goal is to work with students of all ages to develop their technical ability, musicality, and personal interpretations.

By working with students on a one-to-one basis I tailor my instruction to the needs of the individual in all aspects of music education including rhythmic training, sight-reading, musicality, and technique.
Movement and singing are an important part of my lessons on all three instruments in order to teach a well-rounded and well-grounded approach to music.

Please check out my résumé for a comprehensive summary of my teaching experience.

Piano

There is no wrong age to start your musical journey and piano is the right instrument on which to do that. Whether you are 5 or 65 years old, completely new or experienced I am happy and excited to work with you toward your musical goals.

I accept students of any age and any skill level.
Beginning student lessons focus on building a foundation of technique, note reading ability, and basic music theory through playing, movement, and games.

Intermediate and experienced student lessons focus on interpretation, technique, sight reading, and music theory within the classical repertoire.

My Piano experience:

I started taking piano lessons at 6 years old and have been playing piano for 17 years. For 12 years I took lessons in Bonn, Germany, before studying with Professor Louanne Long at the University of Redlands. I have performed internationally in Den Haag, the Netherlands; Brussels, Belgium, as well as given a solo recital and a lecture recital entitled Apollonian and Dionysian Elements in Classical and Baroque Keyboard Music.

I currently teach piano at the University of Redlands Community School of Music and the Arts as well as privately.

Organ

University of Redlands Memorial Chapel Casavant Frères organ

Organ is an exciting instrument to play and just as much fun to learn. The breadth and depth of organ literature is immense and reaches from the music of the Ancient Greeks in the 3rd century BC all the way to the exciting new compositions of contemporary composers. With dozens (sometimes hundreds) of sounds at your fingertips the range of emotions, styles, and dynamics you can play are almost limitless.

Organ lessons focus on organ manual and pedal technique, stylistically correct interpretation, registration, and organ literature.

Because the organ is so complex I currently only accept students with previous keyboard/piano experience.

Do you really want to try out the organ? Not sure if you fit into that category? No worries! Feel free to contact me and we can set up an orientation lesson where you can try out the instrument!

My organ experience:

I started playing organ in my first year of college and have been playing for 6 years now. I studied first with Philip Hoch in the Frederick Swann Studio and then with Dr. Alison Luedecke. I have performed in masterclasses with Dr. Mary Beth Bennett, and Peter Dubois, as well as in solo recitals in Hennef, Germany; Eudenbach, Germany; and the University of Redlands. I have also played for convocation and ceremonies, weddings, compline services, the University of Redlands Wind Ensemble, and the annual Feast of Lights at the University of Redlands.
I am the organist at First Congregational Church of Riverside as well as La Sierra University Church, Riverside.

I currently teach organ at the University of Redlands Community School of Music and the Arts as well as privately

Voice

The voice is a special instrument because not only do we carry it around with us all the time, but we all have one! We all sing - in the shower, in the car, with friends, really quietly to ourselves, or out loud for everybody to hear and it is beautiful!

That is why taking your singing to the next level is so much fun.

Voice lessons for beginning students focus on basic vocal technique, breathing, ear training, and basic music theory. Through the use of songs, movement, and games the lessons are structured so that students of all ages can enjoy the material

Lessons for more experienced students focus on:
• Classical vocal technique
• Classical repertoire
• Diverse opera, oratorio, and cantata arias and recitative,
• Classical art songs
• German, Italian, French, and English diction
• Aural training

My voice experience:

I began studying opera during my first year at the University of Redlands and have studied continuously for 6 years. I currently study privately with Cindy Snyder.
I have sung roles in various operas including Mozart’s Idomeneo, Purcell’s Dido and Æneas, and Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi. I have performed at the University of Redlands Opera gala and was the bass soloist for the Temecula Valley Master Chorals’s production of Handel’s Messiah.

In addition to my solo experience I have extensive choral experience in the University of Redlands choirs under Dr. Nicholle Andrews, Dr. Joseph Modica, as well as a founding member of Kyri8 Vocal Ensemble, and with my Master’s degree ensemble.
I also sing in a number of professional ensembles including:
• Los Angeles Master Chorale (Auxiliary member) - Los Angeles, CA
• Long Beach Camerata - Long Beach, CA
• Longe Beach Camerata Catalyst Ensemble - Long Beach, CA
• Colorado Bach Ensemble - Denver, CO
• Choral Arts Initiative - Newport Beach, CA
• Pacific Chorale - Newport Beach, CA

I have also sung on major stages with The Who (Greek Theater LA), Sarah Brightman (Honda Center, Anaheim; Viejas Arena, SD; Dolby Theatere LA), and Josh Groban (Palm Springs; Greek Theatre, LA)

I currently teach voice at the University of Redlands Community School of Music and the Arts as well as privately.

Covid-19 Policy
Because of the number of students I see and the contact I have with possibly at-risk groups there are some rules I must insist on for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Students are required to show proof of vaccination before the start of the first lesson or a negative COVID-19 PCR test before the first lesson .
• Students who are not eligible for the vaccine must unfortunately remain masked for the duration of the lesson and show a negative COVID-19 test before the first lesson.
• If a student is sick they may not come to the lesson. The lessons will be moved online until they feel better and can show a negative COVID-19 PCR test.
